RICHARD DEAN ANDERSON

Date of birth:  23 January 1950
Location: Minneapolis, Minnesota, USA

Nickname: MacGyver
Height: 6' 2" (1.88 m)
Trivia:  Is on the board of directors of "Handgun Control, Inc." In the TV show "MacGyver", his character always refused to use guns.
Daughter:  with Apryl Prose, Wylie Quinn Annarose Anderson, born. [2 August 1998]
Dated German ice-skater 'Katharina Witt'
Would have played professional Hockey except he broke both of his arms during a game. He then turned to acting.
Performed as a mime before acting in television.
Had band called Rickie Dean and Dante during college years.
When he was 16, Richard Dean Anderson broke both of his arms in separate accidents on the ice. He broke his left arm first, and while skating 3 weeks later he broke his right arm so badly he was in the hospital for 3 months. His elbow snapped backwards and he's still got pins in there.

According to MGM's official web site he's Internationally known for his title role in the tv series MacGyver although I missed it when it was shown in Britain which is a shame as Marge's sisters (The Simpsons) are fans of it and it sounds good.
Rick is an American, born January 23, 1950 and raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota, he studied drama at College and University. His father, Stuart, taught high school English, as well as being an accomplished jazz bassist. Rick's mother, Jocelyn is an artist, specializing in both painting and sculpture. Anderson is the eldest of four brothers: Jeffrey Scott, Thomas John and James Stuart. He grew up there and was very keen to become a professional Ice hockey player. Unfortunately Rick broke both arms in two separate incidents which prevented him from playing as a professional.
With his dreams shattered Richard eventually took place at St.Cloud state college and then onto Ohio University studying drama.
On college radio during his Ohio Uni. years, he earned the nickname "Ricky Dean" and in his early years he also sang and played guitar as part of his own rock band called "Ricky Dean and Dante".
He left college just short of completing his degree and traveled around the U.S. Anderson spent significant time in the Haight-Ashbury district in San Francisco during its cultural revolution. After finally settling in Los Angeles, Anderson found work as a street mime and juggler, as well as working in a Renaissance-style cabaret act. He also worked for Marineland, where he wrote, directed and performed in the marine mammal shows. His job also included the enviable task of balancing over the tank holding fish in his mouth so that the resident killer whale could leap into the air and snatch it out of his mouth. Anderson tells us of his first time performing with the whale when he was nervous and flinched when the killer whale barreled out of the water at him. He had a huge bruise on his forehead for weeks.
He was in General Hospital tv series for 5 years and has been in several tv movies.
He's most well known for his role in MacGyver. It was in 1985, that Anderson was cast in the lead role that made him famous MacGyver (Most of the Cast of SG-1 has had parts in the series). Henry Winkler (executive producer of MacGyver) claims that "Anderson won the role the moment that he asked to wear his glasses to read the script." Being very nearsighted, Anderson's lack of self-consciousness convinced Winkler that they had found the perfect man to become the unpretentious hero, MacGyver. The series ran for 7 seasons.
Following the wrap of MacGyver, Anderson and his partner, Michael Greenburg, formed their own production company, Gekko Film Corp. Their first project was the two MacGyver movies which Anderson acted, and was executive producer. Their following project, Legend, for UPN demonstrated Anderson's extreme talent for comedy. Although Legend lasted only one season, Anderson claims it was his favorite project.
In his free time Anderson plays hockey (He was chosen, in '88 and '92, as the honorary captain of Team USA for the US Olympic Hockey team.), races cars and skis any one of his favorite mountain ranges.
He is the co-founder of the Celebrity All-Star Hockey Team which raises funds for charities in conjunction with the NHL and is an active fund-raiser and board member for the Challengers Club, a children’s recreational center in South Central L.A.
Anderson recently became a father for the first time to the exceptional Wylie Quinn Annarose. Wylie, her mother Apryl and Richard share time between their homes in California and British Columbia.

Richard Dean Anderson As McGyver Richard Dean Anderson and daughter Whylie 2003 What a smile!
GENERAL/COLONEL Jonathan "JACK" O'NEILL (now  Brigadier General  as of season 8)

In the film the character was played by Kurt Russell, in the series by Richard Dean Anderson. He was recruited as he was prepared to die after his son had killed himself (accidentally) with Jack's gun, the accident also led to his divorce. Over the life of the programme this has been brought up in various episodes and, while he'll never recover totally, he seems to have come to terms with it.
In the film he made friends with one of the boys (Skaara) on Abydos who hero worshipped him, and when he returned to Abydos Skaara was really pleased to see him. Jack was devastated when Apophis took Skaara, along with Sha're, to be a host - this gave Jack and Daniel a common bond and an even greater reason to be on the Stargate project.
He's got a wry, sardonic sense of  humour and he's an excellent team leader of SG-1, they all respect him. General Hammond has complete confidence in him and often offers him a degree of leeway in his execution of his orders. He's a very good soldier. They've contacted lots of alien races, and the Asgard are particularly taken with him and use him as their liaison with Earth.
He has problems with scientists, finds them boring. This is why, initially, he thought Daniel was a geek and was a bit hard on Sam - he now likes and respects (and rather more than "likes" Sam) both of them although when they start giving him long scientific explanation he tends to go "Arghh! Just tell me can we or can't we?", or similar.

I like this character, he's a good leader, takes care of his team, not scared of taking risks, and he's funny. He's also not afraid to admit if he doesn't know something - indeed while he's fine using technology he really isn't interested in how it works.
Jack was promoted when General Hammond was seconded to the Pentagon, originally Dr Weir was to be in charge of the SGC but she moved on to be in charge of the outpost at the Antarctic and then Atlantis. This left a vacancy and so the President promoted Jack (presumably having changed his mind about the need for a civilian commander like Dr Weir). Jack's first job on being promoted to General was to make Sam a Colonel. He wasn't happy at being promoted said "I've spend all my life sticking it to the man and now I'm going to be the man, I don't think I can do that!" But he did and took the promotion and we had a few funny episodes while he tried to get used to it. He's now been promoted again to Head of Homeworld Security, taking over from General Hammond.
